Off-Season Things to Do

Shoulder season, mud season, off season… no matter what you call it, the time period between when the mountain closes and summer starts or between when the summer ends and the mountain opens is definitely a lull in the usually bustling town of Breckenridge. But “Off” season does not mean the town actually shuts down completely. Yes, the mountain and a few restaurants close but if you play your cards right, these off-seasons can sometimes be the best time to visit and take advantage of thinner crowds, dinning deals and experiencing Breckenridge like a local. If you want the inside scoop on where to go and what to do during the off-season, check out these local recommendations on the best way to enjoy Breckenridge during these times of year.

Please Note that due to COVID-19, not everything on this page may be available.  We recommend calling businesses to find out what they are offering during the current times.  We are also recommending to checkout www.gobreck.com as they are updating their website frequently with events and things to do in town!

  • Fly Fishing: Colorado trout are a bit different than anywhere else making the fly fishing in and around Breck slightly more difficult. Go talk to Breckenridge Outfitters to see what’s biting where and string up that rod for an incredible day in Colorado.  They provide year round guided fly fishing trips.  970-453-4135

  • HikingThere are many beautiful hikes in and near Breckenridge.  We have listed a few favorites on our Hiking page on this website.  Hiking is something that you can do year-round in Breckenridge...just make sure to dress appropriately and check trail conditions prior to going.  In other words, if there is a lot of snow, you may want to think about snow shoes!

  • Shopping:  If you are looking for some deals on gear, now is the time to buy. Walk up and down Main Street and visit the many ski and board shops who are practically giving away past season’s equipment to make room for next year’s stock. With the winter weather lasting a bit longer in the mountains you can still wear that winter apparel you got on sale for a few more weeks before breaking out your flip flops.

  • Escape Rooms:

  • Taking in the Views:  This is a unique time of year to see the Colorado landscape. The seasons are changing, snow is melting, grass is starting to show and you don’t have to fight over a parking spot at every public overlook.  Head up Baldy Road on Bald Mountain, where you’ll find great hiking trails and easy access. Check out some of the scenic trails on Boreas Pass while you are over there.  Try a drive over swan pass north of town. Several overlooks line the mountain road where one can catch stunning views of the Dillon Reservoir and Ten Mile Range. If the weather is nice, the paved bike recreation bike path that winds through town also provides a great way to enjoy the beauty of Breckenridge and get in some extra exercise as well.

  • Dining: This is where the true insider knowledge lies. During the off-season, many restaurants close their doors or have shortened hours due to the thin crowds. However, many of the ones that stay open have amazing deals on meals that would normally break the bank.  Make sure to check out the Summit Daily (our local newspaper) for dining deals around town.

  • Breckenridge Arts District: BreckCreate arts district is a great place to explore what the local artists of Breckenridge are up too. Take a class on pottery of figure drawing to boost your own artistic skills or bring the kids to a class designed specifically for them. Less people will mean smaller class sizes and more one-on-one attention for you and whoever is accompanying you on your vacation.

  • Skiing:  Yes… this can still be a thing, even in the off-season. Loveland and Arapahoe Basin are the two closest ski resorts still open through May. A-basin usually opens in October or early November.  With warmer weather you can leave you heavy ski gear at home and enjoy the sunny, uncrowded slopes in style. This time of year won’t always bring stellar snow, but it’s the perfect time to just relax and enjoy the slopes before packing up your gear for the season.

  • Road Biking:  As long as it's not snowing, your road bike can take you anywhere. Hit the road and head toward Swan Mountain Road for a steep climb to Sapphire point or if you prefer, you can stay on the bike path and ride all the way to Vail!

Youth and adults are welcome to use the park for free during daylight hours. Several competitions are held throughout the summer months at the Park. The Skateboard Park is open seasonally as conditions permit.  http://www.breckenridgerecreation.com/locations/breckenridge-recreation-center/breckenridge-skate-park

  • Happy Hour:  Some of our favorite Happy hours are Southridge Seafood (Best outdoor seating!!!!), The Briar Rose, Twist, Hearthstone, Blue River Bistro, and Quandary Grill.  Most of the restaurants in town have a happy hour and there are a lot of great ones!  So just walk around and see what strikes your fancy!

  • Hot Springs:  There are some great Hot Springs around!  our 2 recommendations that are the following:

    • Mount Princeton Hot Springs: These are pretty awesome because the springs are right in the river...so pretty unique!  Mountain Princeton Hot Springs is about 1.5 hours from Breckenridge.

    • Hot Sulphur Springs: This is another great option!  We like these a lot because there are a bunch of different tubs that are all different sizes and temperatures. This is also about a 1.5 hour drive from Breckenridge.  For a scenic drive, make sure to take UTE Pass Road/County Road 3.

  • Treat Yourself to a Day at the Spa!:  Treat yourself to a relaxing day at the spa!  At both the Grand Lodge at Peak 7 and the Lodge at Breckenridge, you can use their amazing facilities if you book an appointment with them!  Both places also have restaurants that are quite delicious!

    • The Grand Lodge at Peak 7Located at the base of Peak 7.  You can drive, take the free bus, or take the gondola up!

    • The Lodge at Breckenridge: The Lodge is located up Boreas Pass Road.  It has breathtaking views.  They also offer a free seasonal shuttle service to/from Main Street Breckenridge.
